After a long, hot summer, there is nothing better than the crisp, cool air of autumn. Hand in hand with hot apple cider and pumpkin spice everything are books you can sink into your couch with. Moody and magical (and with a spooky hint) here are some of my favorite books to help you get into the spirit of the season.
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas
Set in the shadow of the Mexican War of Independence, this Rebecca retelling centers on Beatriz, a young woman who lost everything in the war and is desperate to find a home. When she receives a proposal of marriage from the mysterious Don Rodolfo Solórzano she jumps to say yes. But Hacienda San Isidro is no home. It's a tomb of secrets, haunted by malevolent spirits that everyone feels, but no one but Beatirz acknowledges. And above it all, a question looms: what really happened to the first Dona Solórzano? And how can Beatriz keep it from happening to her too?
Youngbloods by Sasha Laurens
Vampire boarding school? Need I say any more? This one is less horror story than teen drama, but nevertheless its a romp of a read that will keep you glued to the page. When Kat receives a scholarship the the prestigious Harcote School she knows she’ll do anything necessary to succeed. For a young vampire who can barely make ends meet, it's a true life changing possibility– even if it means rooming with her former best friend, Taylor.
For Taylor, it's not as easy. Raised in wealth and privilege, Taylor is always at war against a system that doesn't want to see an out and proud vampire. And to have to live with Kat? The girl who broke her heart? Sigh. High School sucks. But when one of their teachers is murdered, the two girls will have to find common ground– and a killer– if they want to solve the mystery that is Harcote Scool.
The Atlas Six, by Olivie Blake
You’ve probably noticed that dark academia is a thing this year. If you’re looking for an adult version of this trend, look no further than The Atlas Six. The Alexandrian Society is a prestigious order of magicians that churns out thought leaders and politicians and captains of industry and receiving a fellowship could change the lives of the six magicians selected in a once-in-a-decade chance to join the society. But everything comes at a price. Because while
six magicians go in. Five come out. Would you be willing to pay the price?
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
The Ninth House isn’t new, but fewer books capture the spirit of the season more than the book that kicked off the dark academia craze. Alex Stern is no upper crust yippie on her way to the ivy league. A high school dropout who was the sole survivor of a mulitple murder, Alex is plucked out of obscurity and offered a coveted spot at Yale. But why?
The answer will take her to the heart of New Haven, where Alex will be tasked with monitoring the activities of Yale’s notorious secret societies. ‘Tombs’ where the children of the rich and powerful play at magic and toy with occult powers they barely understand. But these powers are more sinister than anyone can understand. The second book in this electric series comes out this winter, so grab this book and catch up while you can!
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
To say I am obsessed with this book miiiight be an understatement. It’s the kind of book that makes me want to be a better writer. Lyrical and magical and terrifying, you will fall into this story feet first and land in a world not quite your own.
As children, the three Hollow sisters disappeared from a Scottish street, only to suddenly be found a month later with no memory of time lost… or who took them. And the oddities of their lives don’t end there. Their hair slowly turns white, their eyes change from blue to black and their father takes his own life with the raving surety that these three girls are not his children.
Now in high school, the youngest Hollow sister, Iris, wants nothing more than to leave her past in the past. But when her oldests sister, Grey disappears again, Iris and middle sister Vivi will have to dredge through the darkness at the edges of their lives and uncover what exactly happened to them all those years ago.
